"I should be careful," she says.
"Not go too far into it?" He says and she thinks she can detect a hint of mockery in his voice.
"You don't know where I've been," she says and her voice is cold.
He shakes his head. "Let me guess." He looks her once over and she shudders, uncomfortable. "You started playing with magicks... You found you're very good at it. A natural. Powerful," he says and inhales through his nose and his eyes half-close. He licks his lips and she narrows her eyes. "Don't worry, dear. I'm only admiring."
"Wasn't worried," she says. She's confident. She knows her power.
She's just not sure about his. He's not a weakling himself. She knows that. She just hopes she assessed him right.
He smiles benignly, which worries her more than if he'd be making threats. And he continues describing to her what he thinks she's been through. She hates that it's accurate. "You wanted to play more. And more. On higher levels, and then higher, and then you just wanted.... to be high."
She nods imperceptibly, but he catches the movement and grins, self-assured in that irritating way of his.
"You lost control, you spiralled... And Rupert was less than happy." Here his voice changes, ever so minutely, but she catches on, and smiles in her own way. Two can play at this game. He smiles back and his eyes are hard.
"He helped me," she says simply, because that's how it was.
Ethan just nods, like he's not surprised.
"He was right," he says, and now
Willow is surprised. Because of their animosity, which was never explained to her but she's now old enough and experienced enough to guess, at least partly, what happened. "If you were allowed to implode..."
"I nearly destroyed the world," she blurts and isn't sure why she's being so open with him. Maybe because they're meant to work together soon enough, and she wants him to know and be careful. Or maybe she wants him to be scared.
Or maybe she just wants someone to understand.
He nods again, still not surprised. Not condemning. It's nice like that. Even if he is a Bad Guy.
"So you better keep the reins at all times," he says and his voice is lower and quieter, like it's already in the chant. For a moment he reminds her of Giles, all serious and caring. But that's just when she's not looking into his eyes and sees that they're alight, and weird, and darkened over. "Don't lose yourself..." his voice trails over the clouds, and she knows they've started.
"I won't lose myself," she says quietly, her words bright and solid in the room between them. He looks up from inside whatever it is he's inside of, looks out to her, and smiles.
That's when they start for real.
