"He said it's wrong; I'm not allowed. No one but the Priests may step into the Temple, and no one but the Highest of the High Priests is allowed into the chamber. But I enter anyway, frightened, trying to stick to the shadows of the tall, menacing stone walls, I run down the corridor and reach for the door and I open it and I am inside."

Flashes of something golden, something so bright it may melt the eyes of any human, may burn their faces until even the skull is no longer bone, but ash.

"And the God resided there, as they have told me. It burned bright... so bright I thought I'd die. But I did not die. I lived. And I was more alive than ever I was before. Than ever any other man, woman or child, has ever been before."

Wings spread, every feather gold like sunlight, and when they grow wider, poised to fly, they shimmer like the surface of a lake first thing in the morning, and last thing in the evening. The light is now sound, a thousand voices screeching at once, calling from afar, calling from within. A million insects, buzzing in the distance. A million butterflies just beyond this bright burning door.

"I walked to it. It called me, and the love it spoke was so strong I would've wept, had I had any tears left in me. The love I felt thrummed in every bit of me, every inch of skin, every organ inside, every hair and every drop of human moisture I still had. It wanted me to go with it."

And the child walks into the light...

He wakes from a dream; a memory. He wakes thirsty, and his skin is itching. His face sweats. He's gasping for breath, and the dream slips away... He doesn't remember anymore what it was that woke him.

If he had looked, he would've seen one last shimmering, golden feather, floating in the air and disappearing into light.
