"Why did we ever decide to do this?"
"Same reason skinny-dipping in a Scottish lake in January seemed like a good idea at the time..."
They were young; they were foolish. They were on vacation and made it up north as far as their wreck of a car would take them. They had a brisk walk in the refreshing air - read, they ran, huddled, in the fucking frozen cold - until they reached a cabin that would let them rent a room. They defrosted their bones, sitting next to a fire that crackled cheerfully in its red brick cavern and passing a bottle of relatively good alcohol from hand to hand. It was mid-winter, and they spent the night there in the cabin, laughter growing louder as the hours ticked by.
Dawn found them drunk but not down for the count, merry and courageous as only young drunken men can be. They went outside to clear their heads, and that's when they saw the lake. Big and blue and beautiful, shining bright in the morning sun. The sky was blue and cloudless, and, between bursts of laughter, they decided to have a quick swim.
Lucky thing no one died then. As it was, one caught pneumonia on their return, three of them were sneezing for a week, and every male in the bunch found that parts of his anatomy disliked the idea of skinny-dipping so much that they decided - the parts, not the boys - to crawl away and hide until in warmer climate.
"It wasn't funny."
The man he speaks to, all grown up now, grey in his hair, chuckles. His eyes glitter in the same way they did back then; some things never change. "Of course it was."
