Summary: Could I be any clearer, River asks.
"Why is he so [damn] stupid?" Kaylee really doesn't get it. She practically threw herself at the young handsome doctor, who is obviously interested, but does nothing about it. His sister is sitting on the mechanic's bed, braiding her hair.
"I don't know," she says in her quiet voice that still manages to pierce everything and be clear in Kaylee's brain, "he's always been like that. Ever since he was a [little snotty boy]".
Kaylee laughs at that, and after a moment River joins her. The braid is twisted out of shape in the fits of giggles. Finally they both calm down.
"How can you be so [damn] stupid?" River asks then.
Kaylee turns her head in surprise. The braid is a lost cause. "What do you mean?"
River shakes her head. "This ship, full of [crazy] blind people," she says. And then, gently, deftly, she pulls the strap of Kaylee's tank-top off.
Bare, tanned shoulder. One freckle. A stain of something dark like soot or grease from the engine she loves so much. It's unbearable naked in the small room. River tilts her head and looks at it. So does Kaylee, before she remembers to look up, face River, get kissed.
Soft lips, soft skin; soft hand on her cheek, guiding her, and Kaylee closes her eyes and lets go of surprise so she can enjoy this better. River tastes funny sweet, like the chemical sweetener of the protein-soda she drinks. And she feels funny soft, slim in Kaylee's arms, and her breasts press against Kaylee's. She kisses like making a point.
They break apart.
"What was that?" Kaylee breathes. A smile of surprise on her face, blush on her cheeks; she's not angry, just unsure.
River smiles back and gets up from the bed. "That's something my [incredibly stupid and blind] brother might understand," she says. Kaylee smiles and nods and touches her own lips. River starts to climb up the ladder. She's almost out when she finishes the sentence, and Kaylee can barely hear her.
"...Although you sure didn't."
