With a machete he reaps, long precise motions, ignoring the pain in his arms, in his back. He reaps, and the bodies pile up to his left and right.

The night is crisp, sharp and so full of stars he can imagine for a moment it's all the souls he's taken today. But only for a moment. He moves, automaton-like, on and on.

Taking a break, he stretches on the dewy grass before the night ends, breath coming out in faint smoky puffs, clearly visible in the brightness. The cold seeps through his shirt, through warm skin, and to the bone.
