Taru isn't much into girls; doesn't really know any. Somehow she spent more of her young life around men. Warriors. Not a lot of softness there. But she did learn to recognise power.
Willow has power. But she also has softness and care, infinite tenderness in her speech, something that is different from everyone Taru has ever known before, because of the power but also because it doesn't look like Willow's life is an endless struggle. She may have been in a fight or two - Taru can't imagine anyone who hasn't - but these small soft hands were not trained to hold a sword from the moment they were just barely big enough. And Willow wears long flowing dresses sometimes, and she has a little smile that Taru thinks of as cute.
Besides, everyone is doing everyone after a certain age, she's learned that if nothing else.
And Willow is mortal. Probably has decades more to go, but Taru learned to think in different terms. Mortals are to be used quickly while still fresh and still alive, like strawberries. If you keep them for too long, trying to savour them, you only end up losing them.
She thinks about asking any of her extended family about how she feels, but then she thinks better of it. There is not one person among them she'd trust to know the first thing about.... this. Relationships. Or just... this.
She looks at Willow sometimes like she's trying to study her. Understand her like she would a book. If you look at it long enough, it starts to make sense...
Then Willow asks her to the movies and Taru thinks it's just a thing girls do, because it is, but she knows that little smile just changed and doesn't just mean friendly anymore. So she turns her head and catches Willow by surprise, and the kiss is awkward and Taru cut her lip a little on her own teeth, but she doesn't care. Barely even notices it until Willow says,
"You taste like blood," and there was worry in her voice.
"Just nicked myself. It's nothing." Taru's brisk if nothing else. But Willow holds her face with one hand and looks at her lips like being cut really means something. Taru smiles.
"So what made you kiss me?" Willow asks and even that is soft.
"I thought you were gonna," Taru says, unsure now. She thought she made the right step before, but...
"I was," Willow says.
And then they both watch the movie.
