#01 - Package
Another package arrived from his mom, and Jayne opened it, giggling with anticipation, to find yet another home-knit item of clothing to keep parts of him warm and snugly during the cold space nights. *
#02 - Obscure
If he wanted schoolin' he'd've gone to school, and if he wanted to get all the obscure references Simon keeps making while they're in bed, he'd stop the sexin' in the middle and ask.
#03 - Skeleton
Everyone's got some skeletons in their closet, and Jayne figures he just has a few more than others, and maybe they're kinda smelly, and maybe other people's skeletons are not so much made of dead people.
#04 - Nurse
Waking from anaesthesia he doesn't quite know where he is, just feels like he's being sponge bathed, and images of busty nurses float in his mind until he opens his blurry eyes and focuses on Simon.
#05 - Domino
Things happen, they make other things happen, they lead to other things happenin' - Jayne's not big on theories, but he knows that tracking down Serenity led to him getting' a job on it, led to him being here, led to him havin' Mal, so all's well what ends well.
#06 - Thaw
Was cold in the airlock, with the wind and the fear of death, and now he's thawing, sittin' in the engine room alone and huddled with his arms around himself, trying to find warmth in Serenity again.

He's been in a place with an ocean once, put his feet in the shallow water, felt it lapping at him, and wondered about that old legend about the guy who could walk on these waves.
#08 - Burglar
Better mercenary than burglar, because droppin' things and makin' noise and scarin' people on the job is actually a good thing.

Gotta work within the frame of the job, the time frame an' the right moves and everything; gotta live within the frame that holds him together, Serenity and the captain and orders and work.
#10 - Carpet
Don't have no carpets on the ship for fear of slippin', except in Inara's shuttle where they can't go, but there's one huge one in this motel room in this small town on this small moon, and Jayne wonders idly as Mal pounds into him, what carpet burns feel like.

She looks like a giant bug, Serenity is, perchin' atop this mountain, and that gorram big hella ship up in the sky looks like it's a foot 'bout to squash it, but Jayne ain't afraid.
#12 - Mentor
Guy who taught him how to shoot, also gave him some good advice about always countin' on himself, 'cause everyone else is a temporary fixture, and he only got himself and his gun, and that advice came in handy when that mentor tried to shoot him.
#13 - Spirit
Book talks about spirituality and River talks about the brain and Mal talks about conscience and all this time Jayne just thinks, life is life, and Jayne is Jayne.

Burnin' like a bullet all over his chest and legs, far too hot an' far too sticky, and Jayne winces and asks Kaylee, "You sure about this stuff makin' me prettier?"

I can kill you with my brain, she said after that gorram garbage job when he was hurtin' and couldn't move, and ruttin' hell, but he believed every word comin' from that crazy mouth of hers, and it made him feel like he's more worthless than trash - disposable and stinky.

He came out of his mother's womb like that, big an' dumb, and he's probably gonna go to his grave the same way, but in the meantime, there's a lot of good times to be had.

Burn of a bullet, burn of eating somethin' funny, burn of walkin' in the sun too long, burn of fire of some kind, burn of bein' stupid enough to touch something he shouldn't have, or just the really nice, stretchy burn of muscles getting' some serious workout. *

Starin' at Mal's behind he wonders why in the guay the captain's all round and firm... naked an' weaponless, and then Mal turns and Jayne catches a glimpse of something big an' heavy an' dangling, and the quest for a reason is ceased and desisted.

River's babblin' psychology about a feminine side and someone called Jung and Jayne don't even pretend to listen, he just sits around wonderin' if maybe someone can teach him how to knit.

He's not a gamblin' man, in that he thinks about what he does, and only does it if it seems smart at the time, which a lot of things do that don't seem so smart later.

Dun' look nothin' like him, all big and respectable-like, lookin' like a hero, only mocking what he really is.

Funny smell in Inara's shuttle made his eyes water, like too-sweet perfume and a million men's spunk, and the thought Mal never got sexed up here and prob'ly never will.

Real wine, somethin' from some rich core planet, the real deal, red like gut blood, tastes like flowers an' something else funny, but not half as fun as mudder's milk and don't get you drunk none.

Looks in the mirror, sees a big guy, groomed well enough, scarred just a little more than your average not-border-planet not-smuggler, naked head to toe and got a little tattoo on his lower abdomen sayin' "I love my captain".

You take what they give you, then you take what you can get, then you take some more and keep it stashed 'less you want 'em to take from you, too.

No fairy's gonna wave a little wand and no wizard's gonna chant the words that would get him outta this life and into some big fancy rich - oh hell, he doesn't even want another life, he's happy here, and he's sure scared of witches.
#27 - Fragment
Just a moment in time, he looks up and sees River lookin' at him, and she's seeing something he can't, like a fragment of his mind or of another reality and for a moment, just one heartbeat, Jayne can get that, understand what she's seeing, and then it's gone.
#28 - Cats and Dogs
Cats and dogs can't get along, and River's a cat, unpredictable and crazy and slashes at you with no ruttin' warning, and Jayne's maybe a dog, big an' scary but soft inside, and they growl and hiss all the time, but sometimes you can find a cat and a dog curled together, all domestic, River purring and Jayne waggin' his tail lazily.

Hums to himself an old children's song when he's cleaning his guns, something his mom used to sing him to sleep with when he was little, when his toys were more plushie and less lethal.

He dun't flinch when he gets shot at, hit with large objects, yelled at and berated by the best of 'em, but one angry look from Mal, and Jayne feels all small inside.

No rush in this, free to take his time, hand slow on his prick, muscles relaxing into it; he's in no hurry.

Jayne's the court jester, not Wash; Jayne's the one getting' laughed at, the one Zoe says they can spare, the one never taken seriously, not the guy with the plastic dinosaurs and ugly shirts.

Safe place, place to go to for lickin' your wounds, place where you know ain't no one who'll stab you in the back while you sleep 'cept you yourself.

Pretty sky purple and darkening on the world, stars start to peek, and Jayne bends low and rests his head on Mal's shoulder, watching the sun set.

Firing weapons is like music, the right rhythm of they shoot, you shoot, they shoot, going up, letting up, and Jayne feels like someone hit a bad chord when it's their turn to launch grenades and none are comin'.

Might not be rich but he can afford that, a crate of apples, just a little thing that makes everyone happy and doesn't take too much outta him.

Used to have an ice box back home with all the foods in it, all the meat, what made him happy; now freezer's got a dead body in it and Jayne's lost his appetite.

Rite of passage, they said the first time they got him to a whore, and the first time they gave him a gun, and the first time he shot a man, but this rite of passage he likes best, the first time he got kissed on his lips all wet an' good-like and nothin' like a whore, by Mal.

"Coast is clear," he says on the comm and they all run and make it just in time to the ship, and that's good, but as they haul ass outta there Jayne leans back, gun still in hand, and thinks about how the coast from where Serenity's sailin' is never clear.

Just a little somethin' from home to remind him of the merry ol' times, remind him of his momma and a little ragged doll sittin' on an old hand-patched blanket on his old tiny bed.

"I ain't morbid," he says, "just realistic," and he spits on his gun to polish it and sits in his room with a barrel in his mouth just waitin' until he knows if the Reavers are here or they're gone.

Dead in space, floating in the black waters, like all the shipwrecks they stole from before, but this is theirs, this is Serenity, and Jayne's heart is in his throat as the little shuttle whizzes its way back.

He usually likes to keep his socks on during, keeps him warm, but this time with Mal in his bunk, he takes 'em off and hides them under the bed, 'cause those were special knitted by mom, and he can't wear them while doin' that.

Sand everywhere, sand in his eyes, sand in his hair, sand in his beard, sand up his crack; the cargo is sand, and cargo bay's full of the stuff, lookin' like an Earth That Was beach for all Jayne knows, and he's rolling around in the sand, sometimes alone like a cheerful child, and sometimes with Mal, and there ain't nothin' child-like about it, then.

Start all, be all and end all, ain't it just - Jayne likes the coin, and the coin likes Jayne back.

The kinda craftiness Jayne knows Mal has and 'Nara too and prob'ly Zoe for all he knows, and he always followed a leader 'cause when he was little he tried havin' that but it was pretty clear pretty fast that he had none.

A single eyelash, dark on pale skin; he lifted it with a finger and offered to River to blow on, make a wish, and so she did with big serious eyes and made her wish in silence, creeping the hell outta him with the look on her, and then she told him he can have a million wishes 'cause of all the hairs all over his face.

Wash drives the ship towards the moon, plummeting forward fast an' hard, and Jayne stands behind him and gorramit if he's not getting pretty hard pretty fast himself.

Mal sorts the net to catch him when - if - he falls, if he falls on the job, and Jayne pulls on the rope to make sure it's stable and he ponders the ways Mal put up a net to catch him if he falls.
#50 - Destination
Dunno what his destination is, at the ends of time, but he's gonna sail here with Serenity 'til he can, and if he ever reaches a destination, he'll know then.
